APPLIANCE SERVICES is a small company offering an old fashioned honest service, in repairing and installing domestic heating appliances in Bristol and the surrounding areas.
We started out as a Corgi registered business, in which we still service/repair/install gas boilers, water heaters, fires and cookers, but are branching out to new renewable alternative energy technologies as they become available and practical. We carry out power flushing to clean out the heating system of sludge and blockages to improve efficiency.
We are also HETAS registered allowing us to work on solid fuel appliances.
Issue Landlords gas and pac electrical safety certificates on the portable appliances in rented accommodation, and issue energy performance certificates.
We can supply products individually as listed, or offer a full design /installation service.
V.A.T is reduced to 5% on installed renewable technology, and grants of up to £400.00 for solar thermal may be possible. Renewable energy is the only way forward for our planet, but in also trying to keep costs as low as possible and with good quality approved products, we have had to source products from across the world.
The one area that we are very excited about is the solid fuel Burning fire/ back boiler unit when coupled together to a solar panel. This appliance can burn coal or wood, (which is the only fuel that can be classed as carbon neutral), because wood will absorb as much carbon when it grows as it will give off when burnt.
In the winter when heat is required, this when coupled to a thermal store can give enough power to provide hot water and space heating for up to 12 radiators, for larger heat output demands any combination of heat inputs can be met with thermal stores.e.g.gas/oil/lpg/electric etc if required.
In the summer when using a solid fuel appliance is not practical, the solar panel can provide almost all the necessary hot water, with an electrical immersion element, or other boiler as back up topping up the requirements if necessary (e.g. a dull overcast day).
The Solar Panel, which should face south, will give you about 100% of your hot water requirements in the summer, and 20% in the winter – averaging 65- 70% throughout the year. This will work alongside any other heating source.
We utilise a d.c. circulation pump running from a 30watt photovoltaic panel, this simplifies the installation (when the sun shines the pump will run), and of course this will not consume any costly electrical power, giving you more savings.
For installations where a longer pipe run than above is required, or if a.c. electric power is preferred, then a controller can be used with sensors attached to the cylinder. When the solar panel is hotter than the stored water, the controller can switch on a pump to transfer this heat into the cylinder.
A standard solar hot water system for 2-3 people complete with cylinder and associated safety controls, can be supplied and fitted onto the roof for about £2500.00. this would give a payback of approximately 10 years (at current prices), but I think we all know which way the energy bills will go, (the higher the energy bill the quicker the payback).
After this period of course you are gaining free energy for the life of the system (approximately 20 years), with the added bonus of increasing your homes value.
As a very rough guide, the price for supply and installation for a solid fuel burning stove/back boiler unit, thermal store, solar panel and controls, would be about £7000.00 – not bad for self sufficiency.
The initial outlay is expensive, but once installed it should be a fantastic return for your money. It is a simple design that should give years of trouble free service.
As stated earlier we currently only install in Bristol, but if you need a local installer in your area please contact us, as we are putting together a database of installers.
Please contact Appliance Services if any installer wishes to get involved in solar hot water installations either experienced or not, as we will be running training courses in the very near future.
